What do school counselors do?

School counselors meet and support all students’ social, emotional, academic, and college/career needs. They help maximize students’ potential for academic success, advocate for students, and collaborate with staff and parents to best support students at school.

The counseling office is a safe place for students to visit when they need to talk or when they need academic, social, or emotional support during the school day.

Meet the Counselors

Mrs. Goodpasture (She/Her)

Hello!

I am thrilled to be joining Lawrence Elementary as your full-time school counselor. I have been a counselor for over 12 years. Being an elementary counselor is so much fun—we get to go into classrooms and teach curriculums like Leader In Me. Students may also see me on the playground, helping them make good choices or resolving friendship issues.

Another reason I love the job is that I run counseling groups for students who might need more time to learn certain skills with a few friends. I will always send out permission slips for joining my groups, and I look forward to collaborating with you to teach your kids how to be awesome humans! I may also see students individually, and I will send out permission slips for that as well.

Please reach out if you have any questions!

Mrs. Hillis - School Counseling Intern

Hello!

I am so excited to be joining Lawrence Elementary as a counseling intern this year! Before stepping into the world of school counseling, I was a teacher at both the elementary and middle school levels, which gave me valuable insight into the unique needs of students at different stages of their educational journey.

As someone who grew up right here in Livermore and now has three children in the district, I feel a strong connection to this community. Social Emotional Learning is a true passion of mine, and I’m thrilled to support students through one-on-one interactions, small group sessions, and classroom lessons to help them build the skills they need to thrive academically and personally.

Degrees and Certifications:

  • B.A. Psychology
    Grand Canyon University

  • M.A. Education and Multi-Subject Teaching Credential

Canine Comfort

I have already seen Penny's benefit with the students. She likes giving "Cavie" hugs to comfort all who she meets! She is AKC-certified and therapy dog certified, as well as certified by the Valley Humane Society.

Students always have the option to engage with her or not. I have a crate I can put her in if a student is not interested in interacting with her.

  • Breed: Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
